Uploaded newer Version after the GameJam with lots of improvements:

  • fixed the lag/shader compilation stutter
  • added full controller support

Game Description:

    Cursed Hero’s Quest is a story-driven 2D Action RPG with puzzle elements. You play as a cute and brave cat and your goal is to free the princess from a magical spell that was cast upon her by a terrible dragon. Unfortunately for you, things don’t go as planned…

How does your game tie into the theme?

    This game uses the theme of unintended consequences in both the gameplay and the story. As you will notice, many of your actions in the game have negative side effects that you must overcome. As for story, we don’t want to spoil anything.

lovely game. It was a bit laggy at times, primarily when loading new enemies but other than that the game was fun and the characters were very cute.

I had the same issue with HTML exports lagging with particle effects but this is a good fix

Hi, yes we already have looked at the problem. And i also saw the video. And it is clear that this is an issue of shaderparticle compilation stutter.

We are already working on improving the  game in several ways and we will also implement a shader compilation step to fix these issues.

the problem was that for example on my Maschine 1080ti ryzen5600 i have absolutly no stutter/freeze with running chrome. So we only noticed it right at the end when one of our teammembers had the same problem and it seems to be way worse if you are running the game in firefox.

In the end we just didn’t had enough time to do a fallback solution (for example a Sprite Animation) or to fix it in time for the submission.

Update: 01.08.2024: we managed to fix the shader and particle compilation stutter, but it was more complicated then first thought.
We will upload a new improved version of the game in the coming days.

An oversight: It's possible to use all keys on a certain door in the summer temple, making it so unlocking the door at the entrance is impossible, causing a softlock.

I think if you made this door be locked with torches instead of keys, it would prevent said softlock.

Thanks for the information, but we are already aware of the error. We have already found a solution through Level Design that prevents this soft lock. After the jam, we will upload the fixed version. Maybe you will play it again and you will like it (:

I'm pretty sure reaching this switch is impossible, because the gap between these rocks is nonexistent,  and isn't allowing my character to walk through without an upgraded sword.

You actually need a new item to reach this crystal. We wanted to remove the gap to make this clearer.

Hi, yeah you are right, it is impossible to reach this switch with the sword.
You have to get the firestaff first (which is located in the same summer/sand dungeon) and use the firestaff (with right mouse button) to shoot a fireball to activate the switch.

Better solution would have been to use a different hurdle maybe a hole so that the player understands better that this switch can`t be reached on the normal way.
In the end we had not enough time to polish a lot of elements of the game. And this is sadly one of those areas.

Pretty enjoyable little game. There was some clever design work implemented. Such as putting bushes besides buttons to encourage the player to attack them. Alongside a clever little twist near the end of the game.

Nice work!

Cute game with cats. I liked it a lot and it was fun to play, although the keys breaking from time to time is quite annoying. All in all nice little game 7/10.
